Irish American Story Project
The website, was set up to collect Irish American stories.
If you have a story to tell, send it in. If you do not have a story, would you know someone who does? For over one hundred and fifty years thousands of Irish people have moved to the US, yet little is known about the experiences that they had along the way. Over the last few years, as the Irish economy has improved the immigration to the US has slowed. In 2006, 3 times more Americans moved to Ireland than Irish people moved to the US. The Irish are known as storytellers, so here is your chance to write to write a short story.
So what kind of stories?
Stories of coincidence, luck, love, sport, hardship, travel, family, success, your families journey in America. We are looking for stories from all walks of life and all ages. If you have a personal story or one about a relative/ friend/ colleague that you would like to share, please send it in. Sometimes, the most interesting stories are about the average persons journey in life - the challenges and opportunities that arise. To safeguard these stories we are offering people the opportunity to upload them here for posterity.About the Irish American Story Project Collator
I worked in New York from 1993-1996 and since then have spent time back and forth. I have always been fascinated by stories of people leaving Ireland and the experiences they had in the US. Some were sad, some happy and some just normal everyday stories but always unique. In Ireland once people left, they fell under the emigration banner. We heard little about their experiences unless they were fortunate enough to become successful.
I can remember reading a letter my brother had received from a friend. His friend wrote how his brother had spent 3 days getting from Canada to the US so he could get into the country for work. He slept rough for 3 days in a forest and under the stars. When he arrived on the US border he was met by friends from his hometown in Ireland. He was brought to Chicago for a new life, the letter was written in 1987, but could have been written at any time in the last century. Help us to capture these stories. Please send on this website to any friends or family who may find it of interest.
